Bio
Barry started playing trombone and piano at age 12. After hearing a Bob Brookmeyer album I made the Valve trombone my instrument. Studied in the California Bay Area playing in the band of Herb Patnoe at De Anza college and playing and writing for the Vern Brooks Orchestra. I also was leader of the West Coast Jazz Sextet, playing in the best local venues. It was at this time I had the honor to play with the great Chet Baker. This was a great experience for me because he was my first influence and still my favorite trumpet player.
Moved to Los Angeles in 1989, and got involved in the jazz scene while writing music for films. As a player I got to play with some of the best LA players. I was a regular member in the big bands of Horis Height, John Renaldo, The Hollywood Horns, and the house band at BB Kings Club. in the Universal City Walk. Also, during this time I had the honor to study with the great studio and Jazz trombonist Slyde Hyde, giving lots of good advice and still telling me the best jokes ever, and also studied with the great jazz trombonist Bill Watrous.
